What is an eye camp?
At an eye camp, the team travels to distant towns and villages, using a loudspeaker to identify suitable patients who will later undergo surgery. This is the best way to reach a large number of patients and has the advantage that they don't have to travel five times. The operation takes place near them. (Our example: Liwale is 265 km from Lindi, and the journey takes 6 hours and 20 minutes.)
What does an eye camp consist of?
The eye camp is elaborate and consists of 6 parts:
1. The sick people need to be found. This is called screening and takes almost a week.
2. After one week, the suitable patients are invited for surgery. This is the most important part of the camp.
3. After another 14 days, a follow-up examination takes place to detect and treat any complications in a timely manner.
4. After 6 weeks, the glasses are measured for the patients.
5. Each one must be custom-made.
6. Once they are finished, they are handed over to the senior physician, who oversees their distribution to the patients.
